Relentless Freeze Festival, Battersea, November 2011

The Streets

Relentless Freeze Festival

A slightly different job for me with this, combining the UK leg of the Snowboarding world cup and some bands. I headed down Friday evening and the lighting for the bands was so bad I just focused on the snow, and left the main acts to the Saturday. On the whole not exactly a brilliant weekend for the music, so the chance to shoot something totally new was too good to miss. The last ever performance by The Streets and great sets from Everything Everything and The Joy Formidable topped off a decent little event.

The event did also see the world’s worst organised presentation, with a TV camerman standing directly infront of the podium and blocking the photographers views during the entire ceremony.

The NME Tour, 2011 live at the O2 Academy Brixton

Crystal Castles

Just your average saturday. Start it in a cinema with a deer, end it on stage while a crazy lady on crutches screams infront of 5,000 sweaty teenagers.

(Well, actually it ended at 1.30am trying to figure out via IM with a guy in LA why my photos were disappearing and why some had arrived with the wrong caption, but thats just me grumbling.)

It had looked like this would be the first year for a while that I wouldn’t be shooting the NME tour, but alas with a week to go the email landed and I was down for it. Four bands, only one of which I’d not shot before but I was particularly looking forward to Crystal Castles, both for the fact that we’d be shooting from the stage, but also the sheer challenge that goes with shooting a band who play largely only lit by strobes, and surrounded by enough dry ice to conceal a small building.

Delphic and Everything Everything live at Leeds Met, May 2010

Delphic

I’ve been trying to catch Delphic since I last saw then in 2009 supporting Orbital and finally manged to at Leeds Met. Even better, they were supported by Everything Everything, another cracking band from Manchester that bridge the divide between indie and dance with some really terrific songs.

Even better was being asked by Delphic’s lighting guy to get some shots of the full lightshow from the back, which was far easier than trying to balance the LED strips and smoke from the pit. As songs like ‘Counterpoint’ and ‘Halycon’ morphed into full on tunes, the lights came to life and I was as happy as a photographer with good lights. And that’s very happy.
