NME Tour 2014 live at O2 Academy Brixton, March 2014

Circa Waves

The NME Awards Tour is always a great chance to see some new bands and usually a decent headliner – the first gig I ever photographed was the 2004 NME tour at Northumbria Uni (The Killers, the Futureheads, Bloc Party and the Kaiser Chiefs – on my dad’s 35mm family camera with a zoom in/out button) and the first gig I shot on an DSLR was the 2005 effort (Maximo Park, Arctic Monkeys, We Are Scientists and Mystery Jets). Thankfully my photography has come on since then (not to mention the transition from a Konica Minolta 5D to a Nikon D3!)

This year’s was no exception – opening act Circa Waves are one of the best bands I’ve seen for a while – think a Scouse Arctic Monkeys with Brian Wilson writing the songs – while Royal Blood are like the Black Keys if Dirty Harry was their manager. Temples were the weakest act on the night – both to photograph (the below frame is unique in that you can almost see the singer’s face) and I thought the music sounded a bit tired. Nice sounds, but the Horrors managed to combine psychedelic sound with tunes, whereas Temples seemed more interested in the former as a stand alone offering. Interpol – not always a great band live, especially at festivals where their sound tends to get lost – were on top form, belting out a set that drew surprisingly little from their forthcoming record and majored on hammering the likes of C’Mere, PDA, Narc and Slow Hands. New track Anywhere is definitely one to watch out for on the new record though.

Also, apologies for the excessive B&W but just seems to have been one of those gigs where it worked! (more…)
